I know some people that tell me that they only get about 5 hours and say that they feel fine; and while that might be true for now, it will catch up to them one day, because it's not fine. Remember it's never easy letting go of the foods that we love; but, we have to keep in mind that we are doing this for our health. Try to find something to eat in it's place that is just as satisfying that you can have instead. For example I love chocolate, instead of eating milk chocolate I now eat dark chocolate. I don't eat it that often, only when I have a chocolate craving; and I love the chocolate covered almonds.

Also, I love crunchy foods such as potatoe chips. Instead of having chips for lunch I eat Quaker Oat Squares, they are really good; my son even like them. And they are a very healthy snack 1 cup has only 190 calories, 5 grams of fiber and you are also getting 90% of your daily requirement of Iron. You can not go wrong eating these cereal as a snack.

What are some ideals that you can share with me? This time of year is the hardest for everyone. Please do not get so wraped up with the Holidays that you forget to eat right. I am not saying that we can’t eat all of the goodies, just don’t have seconds. Remember to drink a full glass of water before you eat and eat slowly. Some people do not realize how important it is to take your time when you are eating… eating slow gives your stomach a chance to tell your mind that you have had enough. When you eat to fast you don’t allow you stomach time to send this message to your mind; by the time your stomach does tell your mind, you are so full that your stomach hurts and your blood sugar level is high.

What are some of the trick that you all use to stop yourself from over eating during the holiday seasons?

Activity Can Help Control Diabetes. So Let’s get Moving!

How Will exercise Help?

Exercise helps lower your blood sugar. Active muscle can use glucose (blood sugar) without insulin being present. Inactive muscle must have insulin present to get glucose into its cells. Exercise helps you lose weight. Being overweight makes it harder for your cells to use insulin, a condition called insulin resistance. Shedding extra pounds can help you control your glucose levels. Losing weight also helps you avoid other health problems. A regular exercise program may help some people with type 2 diabetes decrease–or even stop–insulin or oral medication use. Tripletrack.personaladvantage.com I have to be honest.. I haven’t been getting my exercise in lately. So this weekend I started mall walking again ( I power walk). I promised myself to go at least three times a week for now and I will walk for at least a half hour. Also, I will make sure that I park far away from the stores that I go to such as grocery, dept stores ect. I am asking those of you who aren’t involved with a regular exercise program do the same. As always you should consult your doctor before starting any kind of new activity.

Before and after exercising, measure your blood glucose level. Doing this will help you find out if it’s safe for you to exercise. “I thought that this sounded a little strange, but according to triple track the website that I provided above, you should not exercise if your blood sugar level is high (greater than 300). This is a sign that your diabetes is out of control. If your blood sugar level is that high then you really need to get with your Doctor to find out what kind of activity is safe for you to do because you really need to be doing something. They also suggest that you have a small snack, such as a piece of fruit, before exercising. Also, you want to drink plenty of water, which I hope that most of you are already doing.

Can I count on you to promise to get more active starting this month?
<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.healthylivingwny.com/2007/12/activity-can-help-control-diabetes-so.html' title='Activity Can Help Control Diabetes. That sums up key recommendations from a panel of experts. They’re cited in a report by the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund. (Oct. 31).

Click here to Watch the AP Video
(You can click on the link above to hear this information for yourself)

Dr. Walter Willettt said that they have now found that over weight and Obesity has a strong link to some forms of cancer. He then went on to say that the number one avoidable contributor to cancer is cigarette smoking; but, they have now found that overweight and obesity is not that far behind cigarette smoking as an avoidable contributor to cancer. He said that more needs to be done to educate people on how to loose weight and keep it off, if not overweight and obesity will be the number one contributor, this is because we are seeing a decrease in people smoking but, an increase in overweight and obesity. What are some of your thoughts on these findings? Have you been trying to loose weight? And if so what are you finding to be your stumbling block or what is working for you?

Hello Western New York!

Welcome to Healthy Living WNY. This site is dedicated to helping you live a better and healthier life.

In August 2006, my doctor told me that I would no longer need to take medication for diabetes. This was a turning point in my life, I felt truly blessed! I had lost 65 pounds and kept it off a full year at this point. Everyone I met wanted to know the “Secret” to how I accomplished this since I did it all on my own without the assistance of diet clubs etc. When I told my story, I was repeatedly asked to write it down. I began to realize that people do want to eat right, but there is very little support for a self-motivated program. This inspired me to have this website, to not only tell my story, but to also be able to offer support and the opportunity for others to share their stories.
